It was announced yesterday that Asterisk, a very popular open source project that enables the creation of IP PBX systems, was downloaded 1.5 million times in 2008. Digium announced 50 percent growth in Asterisk downloads, up from 1 million downloads in 2007. The increase is evidence that Asterisk has evolved into a reliable low-cost telephone system solution. An increased uptake of Asterisk in September through November is likely due to companies scaling back budgets in anticipation of a recession.
Asterisk is now at version 1.6. I remembering downloading Asterisk for the first time in its infancy, version 0.2. I deployed my first call centre application based on Asterisk in 2004 (version 0.6). Back then, managing a single Asterisk installation required one's full-time attention.
Asterisk today can be configured for enterprise level uptime. If you are considering a Voice over IP (VoIP) enabled telephone system for your business, our experience with Asterisk could save you real money.
